Challenge

  • As part of a regulatory exercise to create more competition across UK airports BAA were forced to divest/ separate three airports with the first being Gatwick airport.
  • The project focused on creating the strategy and then physically separating Gatwick airport from BAA

Approach

  • Create a strategy to divest the airport utilizing the legal documentation, customer strategy and leading divestment approaches
  • Create a 90 plan for the separation and agree with seller and buyer
  • Create a multi disciplined team from multiple suppliers and form a programme team to deliver the separation
  • Create joint governance between seller and buyer team
  • Manage commercial exercise between seller and buyer and suppliers

Outcome

  • Successfully separated Gatwick airport with no operational issues
  • Blueprint created to separate the next two airports
  • Separation delivered under budget
  • Transitional services agreements completed early
